IVCE offers Spring welding courses

MARSHALLTOWN – You keep hearing about the demand for welders…ever considered that might be the career for you or just curious as to what all the talk is about? How about you farmers who want to repair your own equipment?
Iowa Valley Continuing Education is offering welding courses that will give you a hands-on opportunity to learn basic welding techniques. No prior welding experience required.
Basic Welding (includes TIG Welding), IND 5500.20 will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 31 through February 21 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. You will learn basic stick & wire welding techniques along with TIG (GTAW) processes in 21 hours. Cost is $349.
Welding for Maintenance and Repair, AGR 4000.3, this 4-week course is offered Mondays and Wednesday, February 6 – March 1. You will cover an overview of Stick, MIG, and Oxyacetylene welding, torching and plasma cutting as used for maintenance and repair. Included in the course is welding for different surface conditions such as rust, paint, coatings, or clean. Topics include machine set-up; major processes; weld preparation; techniques for striking an arc; basic joints; weld bead shape; how variables affect the finished weld; where they can be used; safety; and trouble shooting. Tuition assistance is available to qualifying and selected students.
Pre Pipe Welding, IND 2200.4, is offered February 21 through March 23 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. Learn how to perform the SMAW “stick” process enabling student to continue into career pipe welding. Topics include: safety, techniques such as freehand, pipe fitting techniques including preparation and beveling. Cost is $349.
Career Pipe Welding, IND 1300.8, begins March 28 – June 7 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This 11-week welding course offers two welding processes: Alliant Energy and AWS pipe procedure. This class prepares you for a career in pipe welding with SMAW. Must have a basic knowledge of SMAW (stick) welding process. Tuition assistance is available to qualifying and selected students. Cost is $1800.
All classes will be held at the Business and Technology Center Welding Lab on the Marshalltown Community College Campus, 3700 S. Center St., Marshalltown. Participants must wear leather shoes, long sleeves and long pants. Price includes materials and lab fee.
