Friday / August 25, 2017
IOWA FALLS – English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for people who do not speak English as their first language will be offered at Ellsworth Community College, in the Trades and Industries building, room 104. The building is located on the corner of River St. and Elm, near the water tower. Fall tuition is $35. Books cost $25.
In two multi-level ESL classes, students will learn vocabulary, grammar, phonics, reading, writing, and speaking as they read books and newspapers, role play, participate in various group activities, use online resources, and talk about real-life scenarios.
A daytime ESL class is offered on Monday and Wednesday mornings, from 9:00 am -12:00 pm, and starts Wednesday, September 6.
An evening ESL class meets Tuesday and Wednesday nights, from 5:30 – 8:00 pm. This class begins on Tuesday, October 3.
Sherilyn Hitch, English as a Second Language instructor for Iowa Valley Continuing Education, says, “In ESL class, students need to have interesting activities to stay engaged and feel comfortable with what they are doing. Class needs to be fun because learning a new language is such hard work. In addition to face-to-face class time, we use the Burlington English online course with students. They really like it because it is interactive and gives them feedback on their pronunciation.”
“Everyone is welcome to attend, no matter what their level of English proficiency is,” said Hitch. “We hope people will take advantage of this opportunity to become more computer literate and more comfortable speaking, reading, and writing English.”
