Evening ESL classes offered in Iowa Falls
Friday / March 9, 2018
IOWA FALLS – English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for people who do not speak English as their first language will be offered in the evening at Ellsworth Community College, in the Trades and Industries building, room 104. Classes begin on Tuesday, March 20, and meet Tuesday and Wednesday nights, from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Spring tuition is $35 and the textbook is $25.
In this multi-level ESL class, students will learn vocabulary, grammar, phonics, reading, writing, and speaking as they read books and newspapers, participate in various group activities, and talk about real-life scenarios. Students will also gain computer skills as they use online programs. Sherilyn Hitch, English as a Second Language instructor for Iowa Valley Continuing Education, says, “Students need to have interesting activities to stay engaged and feel comfortable with what they are doing. ESL class needs to be relevant to their lives because learning a new language is such hard work.”
Hitch hopes people will take advantage of this opportunity to become more computer literate and more comfortable speaking, reading, and writing English. The evening class is offered from March 20- May 23. At the end of the term, students will receive certificates which indicate their mastery of reading and listening skills.
