Adult High School Graduation honorees

December 2019 HSED graduates

December 2019 graduates who participated in this week’s HSED commencement ceremony: Yovany Trujillo (State Center), Leslie Harrison (Marshalltown), Adriana Padilla (Toledo), and Serina Doser (Melbourne).

Four adult high school graduates participated in the High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) graduation ceremony at the Orpheum Theater Center on Dec. 17. The graduates were among a total of 14 who successfully completed the five HSED tests and achieved passing scores during the fall term.

The HSED Class of 2019 includes Callalynn Beller of Eldora, Serina Doser of Melbourne, Kallen Hanus of Gilman, Leslie Harrison of Marshalltown, David Kurtz of Waverly, Jermaine Oden of Marshalltown, Adriana Padilla of Toledo, Jakob Sells of Gilman, Yovany Trujillo of State Center, and Alexis Valdez of Marshalltown. The class also includes four students who did not consent to have their names publicized.

The graduates received letters of congratulations presented by Patty Mendoza, Iowa Valley’s Director of Adult Literacy Programs, and a short commentary was read by instructor Kathy Siebring regarding each graduate’s future plans. IVCCD Vice Chancellor of Continuing Education Jacque Goodman administered the charge to the HSED class of 2019.

IVCCD Board Director Joanna Hofer of Toledo spoke to the graduates and their families about her experience of dropping out of high school to get married and start a family at 17. Now retired, Ms. Hofer said she completed the (then called GED) high school equivalency tests (then called GED tests) at the urging of her grandparents. As the years went on and her career ambitions and needs evolved, she then earned an associate degree at Marshalltown Community College, a bachelor’s degree at Buena Vista University, and a master’s degree from Upper Iowa University. She congratulated the HSED graduates for their accomplishment and encouraged them to continue following their dreams and pursuing additional education to achieve their personal and professional goals.

Each year, Iowa Valley Continuing Education (IVCE) presents a Director’s Scholarship award to the student who achieved the highest cumulative score on the HSED tests. The December graduating class Valedictorian was Serina Doser, who achieved one of the highest scores ever.
