Pharmacy Technician career training begins Mar. 23

Pharmacy Tech class

Short-term Pharmacy Technician career training will be offered by Iowa Valley Continuing Education in Marshalltown beginning Monday, Mar. 23. The registration and payment deadline is Monday, Mar. 16. GAP Tuition Assistance is available for qualified students in this program.

The Pharmacy Technician class will meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 9:30 pm starting Mar. 23 through May 11. Class will meet at the IVCE Conference Center (room 803) at 3702 S. Center St. in Marshalltown. Upon successful completion of this Pharmacy Technician program, students will be eligible to participate in an 80-hour clinical externship with a local retail pharmacy.

“Local pharmacies are looking forward to providing clinical externships for graduates of this program,” says Robin Carmichael, IVCE Health Education Coordinator. “Those externships look great on a resume, and they often lead to job interviews and/or offers with the pharmacy that hosts the externship. When you combine that with the possibility of qualifying for GAP Tuition Assistance, this becomes a very affordable short-term career training opportunity!”

The GAP Tuition Assistance Program is offered to non-credit certificate programs that are not eligible for federal financial aid. This need-based program provides resources to students who would otherwise not be able to afford training. It is recommended that students apply for GAP Tuition Assistance at least 30 days before the registration deadline of Mar. 16. Persons interested in the GAP Tuition Assistance Program can contact Jennifer Rice at 641-844-5629 or email Jennifer.Rice@iavalley.edu.

To enroll in this program, students should have a high school diploma or a GED/HSED diploma and should have taken math and science in high school. A high school diploma or GED is required to sit for the PTCB exam; refer to the Iowa Pharmacy Board website for further information about the PTCB exam. Students must also be able to read, write and speak English proficiently. Students also are required to take the NCRC assessment prior to Mar. 23. Call Iowa Works at 641-754-1400 to schedule an NCRC assessment.

Cost of the Pharmacy Technician program is $1,299, which includes all materials. Additional information and online registration and payment can be accessed at https://ce.iavalley.edu/workforce-education/health/pharmacy/. Questions can also be directed to IVCE by calling 641-752-4645.
