Update on Antibiotic Use in the Dental Practice

MARSHALLTOWN – Dental Management of the patients with a variety of underlying health conditions will require the use of antibiotics before, during and after dental treatments. You will review the ADA/AAOS guidelines for the use of antibiotics in the dental patient as well as understand the complications and risks associated with antibiotic use. This three-hour class has been submitted to the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners for continuing education credit.

After completion of this course, participants will be able to: explain the new ADA/AAOS clinical practice guidelines on antimicrobial prophylaxis for patients with prosthetic joints; list the appropriate use criteria for the management of patients with orthopedic implants undergoing dental procedures; summarize the changes between the 1997 and 2007 AHA Guidelines on the Prevention of Infective Endocarditis; recommend appropriate antibiotic therapy for odontogenic infections in patients who are medically compromised; and define the term “antimicrobial stewardship.” Participants will also learn about the special considerations in prescribing antibiotics to pediatric dental patients, factors that place patients at risk for the development of Clostridium Difficile associated diarrhea, and explain new treatment options available for patients with Clostridium Difficile infections.

The expert presenter for the Update on Antibiotic Use in the Dental Practice is Dr. Cindy Marek, PharmD, FACA, Clinical Associate Professor, Dept. Oral Pathology, Radiology & Medicine, College of Dentistry and Dept. of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy, College of Pharmacy, The University of Iowa.

She will be presenting this material to the dental professionals on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 from 1:00-4:00 pm at Iowa Valley Continuing Education, Marshalltown, 3702 S Center St, room 808.
