High School Equivalency classes begin January 8

IOWA FALLS – High school equivalency classes (formerly GED classes) begin their second term on January 8th on the Ellsworth Community College Campus. Sherilyn Hitch, instructor, invites anyone who does not have a high school diploma to contact her about these classes.  The cost for spring tuition is $35 and the testing fee is $60. There is no authentic high school equivalency test/diploma offered online. Students must go through a continuing education course to receive a valid diploma.

The State of Iowa no longer uses the GED testing service to issue the General Equivalency Diploma (GED). A new test, the HiSET, is now given to assess competency in reading, math, science, social studies, and writing. This test is given entirely on the computer. When all of the tests are successfully completed, the student will receive a High School Equivalency Diploma (HiSED) from the Iowa Department of Education.

Individuals can begin working toward their HiSED at any time from January 8th through March 26th. Classroom instruction is offered Monday through Thursday. Hitch also supervises an online study course for students who qualify and prefer to study on the computer. After students attend 40 hours of instruction and reach a specific level of reading and math ability, they can begin testing. Attending class accelerates the process and increases computer and job readiness skills.

High school equivalency requirements are evaluated every ten years so that students who earn diplomas in this way have comparable knowledge to high school graduates.  The new tests are taken on the computer to ensure that students have computer skills.  The High School Equivalency classes at ECC prepare students in a more comprehensive way for career and college readiness.

Spring term HiSED classes begin January 8th, 1:00-4:00 pm, room 104, in the Trades and Industries Building on River Street, on the Ellsworth Community College Campus.  Students can start the class at any time until March 26th, but the sooner the better.
