The primary focus of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. This class is 140+ hours of classroom instruction with online assessments and course work and 96+ hours of clinical/field experience. Students will be responsible for the cost of a college and IDPH background checks, any needed immunizations, NREMT testing, and the IDPH and NREMT application fees.
This course provides the student an opportunity to supply cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills in the classroom, hospital, and pre-hospital setting. Students receive pass/fail for classroom, lab, and clinical instruction, and affective domain portions. Instruction is related to patient assessment in areas of basic life support, cardiac arrest, trauma, and medical emergencies. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to take National Registry of EMTs certification testing at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician level.
